Senator Dr. Sarmad Ali entered Pakistani journalism in the early 1990s — a moment when print still dominated the national conversation, and television was just beginning to find its modern voice. Over the decades that followed, he rose through the ranks of the Jang Group, becoming one of the architects of its commercial and editorial direction.

Today, he leads the group as Managing Director, overseeing both Pakistan's largest Urdu-language daily and its most-watched television network — Geo. He simultaneously serves as President of the All Pakistan Newspapers Society, the apex body representing Pakistan's newspaper industry, where he advocates for press freedom and journalist welfare.

In April 2024, he assumed a new chapter: Member of the Senate of Pakistan, elected from Sindh on a Pakistan Peoples Party ticket reserved for technocrats. His Senate work focuses on the issues he has spent a lifetime understanding — media regulation, press freedom, and the structural future of Pakistani journalism.
